New York's observation decks compared

New York now has four major observation decks and they are all good, which makes choosing harder. Here is how they differ and which we would do first.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

Next to Grand Central. Not a plain deck but an experience: mirrored rooms that reflect the skyline endlessly, glass ledges over Madison Avenue, and an outdoor terrace. The view of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings is the best in the city. Timed entry; sunset sells out. Around 90 minutes. Our first choice.

Edge at Hudson Yards

The highest outdoor deck in the Western Hemisphere, a triangular platform with a glass floor and leaning glass walls. The view south to the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade is the selling point, and being outside in the wind makes it thrilling. The best on a clear day. The City Climb, an outdoor harnessed climb, is a separate ticket for the brave.

Top of the Rock

At Rockefeller Center. Three levels of open-air terraces with the classic view of the Empire State Building and Central Park. The most traditional and, for photographers, the best-composed. Included in the Go City passes.

Empire State Building

The one everyone knows. The 86th-floor outdoor deck is a landmark in itself and the new museum floors are excellent. It is the only deck where you cannot see the Empire State Building, which is either a drawback or the point. Included in the Go City passes.

One World Observatory

The highest indoor deck, downtown at the World Trade Center. Sweeping harbour views, an impressive lift, and it pairs naturally with the 9/11 Memorial.

Which to choose

One only: SUMMIT.
Two: SUMMIT and Edge, for two different experiences.
Classic New York: Top of the Rock at sunset.
On a Go City pass: Top of the Rock and the Empire State are included; SUMMIT and Edge are on some versions with limits, so check.
