NASA's launch headquarters on the Atlantic coast, about an hour from Orlando, and the best day out in Florida that is not a theme park. The Visitor Complex has the Space Shuttle Atlantis, displayed as if in orbit with its cargo bay open, the Rocket Garden, IMAX films and astronaut talks. The included bus tour takes you out to the launch pads and to the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where a full Saturn V rocket lies on its side.
One long day covers the essentials if you arrive at opening and take the bus tour first, before the queues. The two-day ticket costs little more and suits families who want to add the astronaut training experience or who would rather not rush. On a launch day the complex is very busy; check the schedule, and note that watching a launch from the complex needs a separate ticket.
Parking is charged. Food is average; eat before or after. The drive along the Beachline is easy, and a stop at Cocoa Beach on the way back rounds off the day. Children under three are free.
Book it. Adults tend to enjoy it more than they expect and children who like space are in heaven.
