How to pay half price at UK theme parks
Advance dates, bundles, annual passes, vouchers and discounts that the gate price is designed to hide.
UK theme park gate prices have risen sharply, and the gap between the walk-up price and the price a planner pays is now enormous. Here is how to be the planner.
Never pay on the door
Dated advance tickets are routinely half the gate price at Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Chessington. The gate price exists to make the advance price look good. Book at least the day before.
Pick your date
Prices vary by date. Weekdays in term time are cheapest, then weekends off-season, then school holidays. If you have flexibility, a Tuesday in June can cost a third of a Saturday in August and has a fraction of the queues.
Bundle
The Alton Towers Midland Pass covers four attractions for less than two of them cost separately. Merlin's London combos do the same for the Eye, Tussauds and SEA LIFE. Hotel packages at Alton Towers and Chessington include a second day and early entry, which for a family is often cheaper than two day tickets and a hotel elsewhere.
Annual passes
A Merlin Annual Pass pays for itself in about three visits and covers all the theme parks plus the London attractions, SEA LIFE centres and LEGOLAND Windsor. For a family with a Merlin park within an hour, it is usually the cheapest option over a year. Watch for the discounted pass sales in January and September.
Supermarket and cereal box vouchers
Two-for-one vouchers appear on cereal packets, in newspapers and via supermarket loyalty schemes several times a year. They usually exclude peak dates but are worth checking before booking.
Food and parking
All the parks allow you to bring food. Parking is charged at Alton Towers; arriving early gets you a closer space. Fastrack passes are the one extra worth considering on a peak-day visit, as they can double what you ride.
Blue Light, student and carer discounts
Merlin offers discounts through the Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service, student discounts at some parks, and a free carer ticket for disabled visitors with the appropriate proof. Check before you book.
