Orlando with toddlers: what actually works
The parks ranked for under-fives, rider switch, and the daily plan that avoids meltdowns.
Taking children under five to Orlando divides opinion. They will not remember it; you will. Done well it is a wonderful trip. Done badly it is a fortnight of tantrums in the heat. Here is what works.
The tickets
Children under three are free everywhere, which makes the sums easier. The Disney 14-Day Magic Ticket is right for a fortnight even with toddlers, because the value is in short visits: two hours in the morning, back to the pool, two hours in the evening. The 14-day validity is what makes that possible. Universal is harder work with very young children; many families skip it entirely at this age or buy the SeaWorld 3-Visit ticket instead, where the pace is gentler and the dining deal covers snacks.
The parks in order of toddler-friendliness
- Magic Kingdom: the best park for this age by a distance. Fantasyland alone is a full morning.
- Animal Kingdom: the safari, the animal trails and the Lion King show. Short and shaded.
- LEGOLAND Florida and the Peppa Pig Theme Park: built for them, quiet, cheap, an hour's drive.
- SeaWorld: Sesame Street Land and the animal presentations. Aquatica has a good toddler splash area.
- EPCOT and Hollywood Studios: a few things each, worth a half day.
- Universal: Seuss Landing and the Minions area, then not much until they are taller.
Rider switch
Every park offers it: one adult queues and rides while the other waits with the child, then they swap without queueing again. Ask at the ride entrance. It means you do not have to skip the big rides.
The daily plan
Be at the gate for opening, do the two or three things that matter, leave by midday. Nap. Return at five when it is cooler and stay for the fireworks if they are up to it. Book a pushchair or bring your own; the parks are enormous and the rental ones are hard plastic.
Where to stay
Close. A villa with a pool twenty minutes away sounds ideal until you are doing the drive twice a day. A Disney or Universal hotel with a bus or boat to the parks makes the midday nap plan actually happen.
